Preparing for a tank inspection from a user’s perspective

A tank inspection is a significant moment in the schedule of a production facility or terminal. It takes time, it requires planning, and the outcome largely depends on what happens before the inspector arrives.

If preparation is inadequate, the inspection is delayed, downtime is extended, and costs increase. In this article, we walk through what preparing for a tank inspection means in practice, and why cleaning is the most critical phase of the entire process.

What the inspection requires from the tank in advance

The inspector needs access to the inside of the tank. This sounds simple, but in practice it means the tank must be empty, clean, and safe.

An industrial tank inspection typically requires the following:

  • The tank has been completely emptied of its contents
  • The walls, floor, and roof are clean so that the structures are visible
  • Gas concentrations have been measured during the emptying and cleaning phases to ensure personnel safety
  • Access openings and ladders are clear and usable
  • Entry into the tank has been properly arranged

If any of these requirements are missing, the inspector cannot begin their work. Downtime continues, and the inspection is postponed.

What is inspected during a tank inspection

During a tank inspection, the tank floor, the joint between the floor and the wall, and pipe penetrations are examined. The owner may also inspect other corrosion points on a spot-check basis.

Tank emptying and cleaning as part of preparation

Cleaning the tank before an inspection is often the most demanding and time-consuming phase of the entire process. Especially in older tanks, deposits may have accumulated on the walls over the years that cannot be removed with a light wash.

For cleaning large industrial tanks, we primarily use our own cleaning robot. It is assembled inside the tank and cleans the tank walls sector by sector, maintaining a precise distance from the tank surface throughout the process. The tank floor is cleaned separately when needed. When the tank is washed solely for an inspection, the cleaning robot is not required — a lighter method works perfectly well.

The practical benefits of the cleaning robot in inspection preparation:

  • No scaffolding erection required, which significantly reduces the overall project time
  • Effective even on old, hardened coatings that traditional methods leave behind
  • Wash material is simultaneously collected outside the tank, keeping the work area clean
  • Less wash water, less wastewater to process
  • Suitable for all large tanks regardless of material

For lighter cleaning needs, we use a tank washer, which is a fast option especially for cleaning surfaces located at height. A manual pressure washer is used in situations where other methods are not suitable for the target.

The most common pitfalls in preparation

Preparation for a tank inspection most often goes wrong for the same reasons. By identifying these in advance, you can avoid them.

The schedule is too tight. Cleaning work in a large industrial tank takes time. If the inspection date is agreed upon before the scope of the cleaning work has been determined, the schedule will fail.

The scope of cleaning is underestimated. The tank’s contents directly affect how demanding the cleaning is. A tank that has been in use for a long time may require considerably more work than expected.

Safety preparations are delayed. Measuring gas concentrations during the emptying and cleaning phases is essential to ensure personnel safety. Once the tank has been emptied and the floor washed, there are generally no harmful gases in the tank — but measurements must still be taken at the right time, and this does not happen automatically unless specifically agreed upon.

Responsibility remains unclear. In terminals and production facilities, the people responsible for maintenance, production, and safety may all assume that someone else is handling the coordination. On the day of the inspection, it turns out that no one is.

Elffi handles the preparation, you pass the inspection

We take responsibility for the entire preparation process, including emptying and cleaning. Your job is to ensure the inspector can get to work on schedule.

In practice, this means:

  • Emptying the tank contents using vacuum truck or pump equipment to a location designated by the client or for appropriate further processing
  • Cleaning the tank walls using the cleaning robot, and cleaning the floor and roof using a tank washer or manual pressure washing as needed
  • Work is carried out by a skilled team operating in Finland and Sweden

Downtime is expensive. Every extra day spent waiting for cleaning or arranging re-washing is directly taken away from production or terminal utilization. Well-planned preparation shortens total downtime, not lengthens it.

An inspection is coming up. The earlier preparation begins, the better the schedule holds.

Tell us the tank size, contents, and the date of the inspection. We will assess the scope of the work and deliver a quote quickly.

We will get in touch, go through the site’s needs, and agree on a schedule that fits the inspection date. No extra coordination, no surprises.
